Buy Belgian Camo Patterns and Surplus
From the postwar years onward, Belgium developed a highly recognizable family of camouflage patterns that became closely associated with airborne troops, commandos and later the entire armed forces. Belgian camouflage is especially popular among collectors thanks to its distinctive jigsaw designs, long service life and wide range of issued uniforms and field gear now appearing on the surplus market.
Belgian Brushstroke Camo
Belgium's first camouflage uniforms were worn by airborne and special forces units in the years following the Second World War. These early designs were heavily inspired by British Denison smocks and used broad green and brown brushstrokes on a khaki background. Belgian-produced brushstroke smocks and trousers were issued mainly to paratroopers, commandos and marine units and remained in service well into the 1960s and 1970s.
Original Belgian brushstroke items are highly collectible today. Jackets, trousers and smocks from this period are quite rare and often show clear signs of field use and tears.
Belgian Jigsaw Camouflage and Surplus Items for Sale
Belgium's most iconic and long-lived camouflage is the jigsaw pattern, first introduced in the mid-1950s. Named for its puzzle-like shapes, this pattern uses a mix of earth brown, green, khaki and darker accent tones. Early jigsaw uniforms were issued primarily to elite units and printed on heavy canvas fabric.
Over the decades, the jigsaw pattern went through several updates while retaining its instantly recognizable layout. Later versions used darker color palettes and lighter fabrics, making them more comfortable while keeping strong concealment in European woodland. Belgian jigsaw jackets, trousers, field shirts and caps are among the most commonly encountered Belgian surplus items and remain popular for both collecting and outdoor use.
Later Jigsaw Variants and Standard Issue Belgian Uniforms
By the late 1990s, Belgium standardized the jigsaw pattern across all branches of the armed forces. This later version features a denser and slightly more compact design and is typically found on ripstop combat uniforms. These modern jigsaw uniforms are practical, durable and easy to wear, which makes them especially attractive to people looking for usable surplus rather than purely display pieces.
Because these uniforms were produced in large numbers and issued widely, they are easier to find today in good condition and a range of sizes. A bit more difficult is finding specific items like hardshells or smocks, but overall it is not a rare pattern compared to some other European surplus gear.
Belgian Desert Jigsaw for Sale
With overseas deployments in arid environments, Belgium introduced a desert version of the jigsaw pattern in the early 2000s. This variant replaces green tones with light brown, beige and greyish colors while keeping the same angular layout. Belgian desert jigsaw uniforms were used in international missions and are less common than woodland versions.
Desert jigsaw items such as jackets and trousers are even harder to source and tend to sell quickly when they appear.
