Greek Lizard Uniforms for Sale
Greek camouflage is one of the most well-known among Balkans camo patterns, especially the distinctive Greek lizard pattern used by the Hellenic Armed Forces. It’s one of the longest-running camo styles in Europe, and despite its vintage look, it's still actively used today across the Greek military.
Early Greek Camouflage
In the 1950s and '60s, Greek soldiers often wore U.S. surplus gear or French-style lizard uniforms. By the 1970s, Greece began making its own camo designs. One of the first was the so-called “seaweed” pattern—a dark, swirled camouflage that looked like tangled shapes or algae. It was used in small numbers and mostly disappeared by the early ‘80s, but it's an interesting part of Greek camo history. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to get my hands on this pattern, but it’s definitely on my wishlist.
Classic Greek Lizard Camo
After that, the classic Greek lizard pattern became the standard. It has horizontal stripes in olive, brown, and beige, made to match Greece’s rocky terrain and dry forests. This version has been used for decades and is still issued today. What’s less known is that a real desert version of this pattern also exists. It was created for Greek soldiers serving with ISAF forces in Afghanistan in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The colors were adjusted for sandy and arid environments, making it more practical for deployment in desert conditions. It was never widely issued and is now rarely seen, but it’s an authentic part of Greece’s camo development.
Greek Air Force Camo or Blue Lizard
One of the less common but very popular versions is the blue/black/grey lizard pattern used by the Greek Air Force. It was introduced in the 1990s and had the same striped design as the army version, but in darker, cooler colors. It didn’t really blend into any environment, but it looked great. This uniform has been discontinued, but it’s still loved by collectors and camo fans (and honestly, it's one of my personal favorites, even if it wouldn't hide you anywhere).
Digital Greek Lizard Variants
But there’s more to Greek camo than just the classic lizard. In recent years, the Greek military tested several digital camouflage prototypes, including a pixelated digital lizard version and a desert digital lizard variant. These trial patterns were designed to modernize the look while retaining the lizard’s original structure, and they actually saw limited use in field testing. However, neither of them was officially adopted, and today, they’re rarely seen outside of surplus and collector circles. We’re lucky to have both digital versions available here in small quantities, so if you’re into obscure patterns or modern Greek gear, this is a rare chance to grab something not often found on the market.
New 2024 Greek Lizard Camo
In 2024, Greece introduced a new, lighter version of the lizard pattern for some special units. This updated design uses more orange, sandy, and green tones instead of the traditional brown and yellow. It seems aimed at working better in arid island environments, like those found in the Aegean. It’s currently being tested, and it remains to be seen whether it will become standard issue.
